introduction
Ancient cultures are fascinating to study because of their similarities to the modern world. Everything we do now is a reflection of what was done in antiquity, as history tends to repeat itself. “Ancient Greece was the cradle of Western civilization,” hence the world around us reveals Greek influences in many aspects (Bontty "A Review"). Several modern forms of art reflect those found in the ancient world. The ancient Greeks were known for their various festivities such as City Dionysia and Lenaia. These events would bring people together for the purpose of entertainment and having a good time. Nowadays, there are several film festivals that occur annually, bringing people together on an even larger scale. Greek plays and mythology have led to many direct adaptations in contemporary modern culture; however, there are also television shows that are not direct adaptations, yet are inspired by ancient Greek dramas. Playwrights draw on topics that are of interest and things that are valued to them. Religion plays a large role in almost every culture and this is no different for the Greeks. As a result, nearly all Greek plays invoke a supernatural being or event. This aids scholars in uncovering knowledge about lifestyles of the past. When one discovers something that seems out of the ordinary, it immediately becomes interesting because it is viewed as exotic. Often times, these foreign traits or behaviours prominent in Greek dramas are adapted, changed, and televised to suit the modern audience accordingly because the uncanny is captivating. So come join us, and you will learn about the something old, something new, something borrowed, and definitely something true.
